You’ve probably been told your whole life that brushing and flossing your teeth every day is essential for preventing cavities – and if you’re a parent, you’ve hopefully been preaching this idea to your child as soon as they were old enough to listen! However, did you know that dental sealants can also play an integral role in cavity prevention? Most people don’t realize the incredible impact these small, simple coatings can have! Here’s what you need to know.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants refer to thin coatings that are applied over the chewing surfaces of the molars (and premolars) to thwart the formation of cavities. Think about how you might park a car in a garage or under a canopy to protect it from inclement weather – dental sealants work the same way! It’s difficult to keep the grooved and pitted surfaces of the back teeth clean and free of debris, even if you’re diligent about brushing and flossing every day. The sealant works to keep these bacteria and food particles from becoming trapped, drastically lowering the likelihood of cavities.

What Does the Dental Sealant Process Look Like?

The dental sealant application process is fairly simple and entirely painless, and it can be completed in just one appointment. The dentist will first clean the tooth and apply a special gel to its surface for several seconds. The tooth is then rinsed, dried, and the sealant material is applied directly to the enamel. This material will bond with the enamel and harden with the assistance of a curing light, becoming a protective shield that is capable of lasting for 5 to 7 years.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for a Dental Sealant?

It’s true that dental sealants are often recommended for young children since they are more susceptible to dental decay and cavities – but in reality, patients of any age can benefit from dental sealants. In truth, the earlier a child receives dental sealants, the better off they will be. The first molars begin appearing around age 6, and the second molars begin breaking through around age 12. Sealing these teeth sooner rather than later can keep them cavity-free from the get-go, saving money in the long run! In any case, your dentist will let you know when it’s a good time for your child to receive dental sealants.
